Psychotherapy clients can transfer their assumptions, expectations, and feelings from previous relationships onto the client-therapist relationship. This paper discusses the management of transference behavior using humanistic and psychodynamic approaches.
Transference is the client's inclination to develop a relationship with their therapist where they unrealistically and unconsciously anticipate the therapist to act like a significant individual from their past events (Pomerantz, 2019, p.291). Powerful early relationships in the client's life twist their viewpoints of the therapist and assume that the therapist's responses will resemble the significant person's replies (Pomerantz, 2019, p.292). Indeed, Mallory's behavior demonstrates transference because she unconsciously and unrealistically redirected her frustration feelings from her past onto the therapist. She had hoped to be married or in a romantic relationship but was not. She also found her job unfulfilling and boring. Consequently, she unconsciously transferred these emotions onto the therapist.
