Self-Esteem and Attitudes Differences Among the LGBTQ Students Community in the United States
Sexual orientation among gays, lesbians, and bisexuals (LGBTQ) have attracted numerous rejections in society. House (2018) noted that about 40% of the American LGBTQ community had reported rejection from family members, friends, or workmates throughout their lives. While many LGBTQ individuals acknowledge that society is more accepting than it was during the past, it remains that there are numerous cases of discrimination and many obstacles to the acceptance of LGBTQ people. The progress is that societal attitudes are evident, but there is much work that needs to be accomplished to ensure that people are not afraid to acknowledge their gender orientation without being exposed to certain gender stereotypes. Two theories explain the differences, the self-esteem theory and psychosocial theory.
Many LGBTQ struggles with self-acceptance, and there is a need for support. The societal attitudes and differences imposed upon the LGBTQ community can be better explained through the attitude theory and self-esteem theory. Self-Esteem is the ability of an individual to accept their conditions and be proud to explain it to other people (Nguyen & Angelique, 2017). In this case, the psychosocial theory is instrumental in describing how individuals, especially teenagers, form their identity and sense of self. The stage can be experienced during adulthood when individuals have never developed a proper understanding of themselves and cannot proudly acknowledge their situation before others. The differences in society usually exist because LGBTQ people have not formed an appropriate sense of their own unique identity.
On the other hand, self-esteem theory centres on self-report, where participants indicate their degree of agreement or acceptance on a series of statements about themselves. When the answers of the person showcase that they have a stable self-regard, the self-report scale used will consider them as well-adjusted. If the responses to the questions show that the individuals have an inner shame or weak confidence in their behaviours, character, or abilities, the scale considers them to be in social deviance.
In order to affirm and explain the self-esteem differences among the LGBTQ community in America, I will conduct a qualitative study where the self-esteem of LGBTQ students is assessed through the administration of questionnaires and interviews based on the accessibility of the participants. The aim is to demonstrate that the psychosocial theory and self-esteem theory are influencing the attitudes and self-esteem of the LGBTQ student community in the United States. The self-esteem and positivity of individual’s attitudes will be evaluated based on their perception of self, their behaviors, and how they express their identity in society. The experiences of individuals are also a significant influence on the person’s self-esteem and attitudes. Therefore, the questionnaires will also cover different aspects of the individual’s independence as well as their perspective to w...
