Ruth Case Study
The problems faced by the client are due to pervasive dissatisfaction. Ruth believes that, at 39 years old, much time has passed, and she does not know where she spent these years. Furthermore, she believes that she has sacrificed enough for her family, including her husband John, without receiving any form of reward for her life. Ruth suffers from dizziness, anxiety, headaches, and palpitations. Her woes are also brought about by small problems as she says that she cries because of minor issues, and there is a feeling of depression (Arthur, 2019). Besides, being overweight also troubles her.
Facilitating behavior change is one of the goals of therapy. In the case of Ruth, a counselor will have to help her realize her self-worth. The other purpose of therapy is to improve the effectiveness and coping abilities of a client. In the case of Ruth, a counselor should ensure that she appreciates her overweight status but work out gradually to attain a healthy physical state. The promotion of the decision-making steps and the realization of the full potential of a client is the other goal of therapy (Kreilkamp, 2019). The counselor should help Ruth make the right decisions, such as advocating for the client to look for work to facilitate her living.
