According to psychoanalytic theory, a defensive mechanism is an unconscious psychological activity protecting a person from anxiety-producing thoughts and sensations associated with internal conflicts and external stresses. These psychological techniques enable people to separate themselves from threats or unpleasant feelings. During rapid shifts in internal and external reality, defense mechanisms decrease conflict and cognitive dissonance. This article discusses defense mechanisms is encountered in people's life. Finally, the paper will discuss the impact of the theories proposed in the psychoanalytic school of thought on Applied Behavior Analysis.
