Explain what is necessary to determine if a person may have a psychological disorder.
There is no set criterion that can be used to determine if an individual has a psychological disorder, nor is there universal agreement on where the boundary between disordered and not disordered is located. However, the American Association Dictionary indicates that the presence of a psychological disorder can be determined if an individual experiences significant disturbances in feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. The disturbances must reflect some developmental, psychological, and biological dysfunctions that cause considerable impairment in a person’s life. Importantly, a person may only be said to have a psychological disorder if the disturbances he/she is experiencing do not align with culturally approved or expected responses to particular events.
