Miguel Centeno and Joseph Cohen trace the growth of neoliberalism to the early twentieth century. The great depression experienced in the 1920s posed great questions on the future of the world economy. Until this time, markets were highly regulated, and banks did not have as much freedom as today. However, developed countries such as the United States realized that deregulation needed to occur to help the economy recover. Therefore, neoliberal policies were passed, allowing banks and other financial institutions more power over the state.
