The decisions of the individual elected as the president, especially of a powerful country as the United States of America, have a very influential effect on the new laws that will then affect the people of its nation, and other foreign countries as well. In this paper, the effectiveness of the presidency of three previous presidents namely, Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson will be assessed with consideration to domestic and foreign policies.
The Presidency of Franklin Roosevelt
Franklin Roosevelt, who is also referred to as “FDR” served as president from March 4, 1933, to April 12, 1945. FDR aims to uplift and promote optimism among the people of America. This is in relation to the Great Depression, or the worst economic crisis known in the history of the United States, that the nation was experiencing during those years. In response to what is happening, FDR enacted the New Deal. These are a series of programs such as financial reforms, wealth redistribution, unemployment relief, and other public work projects, that lasted for roughly six years, from 1933 to 1939 (Faragher, et al, 583). The numerous projects were created to bring back the faith of the American people in themselves and their nation. The New Deal was criticized by a lot of people that were saying that it was not enough, or that it was too much and is already overstepping the known boundaries that a president should be involved with. But the New Deal is also more well known for a lot of accomplishments that revolutionized American’s way of life. It helped bring an end to the Great Depression (Faragher, et al, 586).
Another notable and life-changing achievement of FDR was the Good Neighbor Policy that aimed to better the relations of the United States of America to foreign nations of South and Central America. He promoted stability, trading, and cooperation, instead of waging military force towards other countries. This also resulted in the noninterference of the United States to the affairs of Latin America, in a positive note which strengthens the relations and defense of the countries that are in the West.
