Comparing Adolescence Experiences between American and Chinese
American culture is quite different from that of the Chinese. These are cultures that are based on two very different philosophies and this is reflected in youths’ behavior and experiences as part of the way society trains and develops the young in their midst. Adolescents are the future adults and as such, how they are brought up reflects the values that the society holds. American culture is one that is associated with the creation of the self at the individual level (Fu, 2010). There is a theme of the autonomous self that is associated with the American culture and this is relative to the fact that, individualism is baked into the American culture and values. In contrast to American culture, Chinese culture is more of relating self to the network of others that they interact with in the society. It is paramount to note that, the experiences of adolescents in American culture when compared to those of the Chinese are individualistic and the latter collectivistic (Darwish & Huber, 2003).
Traditionally, studies have shown that adolescents across the globe and across all cultural backgrounds have the same experiences as they move through the space of self-identity. However, this is not the case as different cultures allow for different experiences among teenagers. This is the case with American and Chinese cultures where the teenagers have different experiences through their adolescence growth and developmental stages. The normative approach relative to the contemporary knowledge about adolescence development and behavior is embedded within the western understanding of the human development model. This is largely because of the influence that western culture has had on world systems, including education and research in human development theories. The American-European psychology of human development largely influences the notions of experiences that a person goes through as they develop their identities. There is a misconception that the white patriarchal culture is the norm and the others which are different from the same are simply deviant.
In keeping with the social constructivist paradigm, however, there is meaning that is embedded and constructed based on historical and social context, with culture situated at the core of such construction (Andrews, 2011). It is important to consider the fact that culture tends to be submerged within the system of beliefs, ideas, subtle level of consciousness and values that are used to interpret the human experiences and in this case, the adolescence experiences. It can be considered as the code that fosters one’s understanding of the behaviors, realities and experiences, relative to their meaning and importance.
In western culture, as previously observed, the element of individualism is highly exercised (LeFebvre & Franke, 2013). This is in the sense that, the values that are placed on an individual are basically in tune with the high value that is placed on one’s individual efforts and growth.
