What are some of the typical changes in the adolescent-parent relationship from early to later adolescence? What are the cultural expectations about the level of autonomy that should be achieved during this time? How are the changes in the adolescent-parent relationship linked to going away to college or living at home while attending college? What about the latter adolescents who do not go to college? How might their relationships with parents change during this period?
The adolescent stage is one of the stages in the life of an individual that is characterized by rapid changes in both his/her psychological and physical traits. While the most noticeable changes are those related to the physical aspects of an individual, the adolescent stage also takes toll on the less noticeable aspects such as the psychological, emotional, and social behaviors of a human being. In this article, the author would like to discuss these other aspects especially those related to the social behaviors of an adolescent in relation to their parents. The discussion of this kind of change is important because as we know, parents have been very significant in the development of one’s well-being from the toddler stage up until the latter stages of one’s life. More particularly, this article would discuss these effects in relation to social circumstances such as going away for college or having a lesser of autonomy, among others. In the end, the author believes that in circumstances where an adolescent lives separately from his/her parents, the development of the adolescent becomes heavily dependent on one’s peers.
Adolescent-Parent Relationship
It is a common knowledge that different cultures also have different expectations and social norms when it comes to raising children. Even from childhood to adulthood, children are reared in different ways. A good example of this would be the difference in between cultures who allows spanking their children to elicit discipline while others shun it and view it as a violent method of rearing. This difference in social norms also varies in terms of how much autonomy should parents give to their adolescent children as they progress through the latter stages of their lives. In the East, children in the adolescent stage are mostly given a sufficient degree of autonomy in making choices in their lives, but usually not to the extent where they could engage in decisions that could thoroughly affect their lives in the long-term.
