Health interviews are essential in the overall management of patients. A biased health interview, mainly due to racial discrimination (i.e., against the Hispanics), reduces the patients' quality of care. Therefore, it is essential to have health support systems that can guide marginalized patients.
In the United States, Hispanics experience significant health inequalities leading to suboptimal patient care. Studies have shown that Hispanics suffer from more mortality and morbidity from uncontrolled diabetes and renal problem than non-Hispanic Whites. This is due to the negative impact of the social determinants of health, such as racial prejudice from the health providers (Amirehsani et al., 2017). Thus, excellent communication skills are necessary to provide high-quality care to Hispanic patients. Some important things to remember while interacting with this group include the following: 1) Replacing stereotypes or ideals by conscious adjustment; 2) View the patient as an individual and not as a part of a certain race or culture.; 3) Understand the point-of-view and the beliefs of the patient; and 4) Reframe the health provider’s interaction with the patient CITATION IHI17 \l 13321 (IHI Multimedia Team, 2017).
