New York States definition of Child Abuse
New York’s Family Court Act defines child abuse as an act of failure or failure by a parent or caretaker that results in serious physical harm, medical neglect, educational neglect, emotional harm, sexual abuse, and exploitation of a child aged 18 years and below (Bloomberg, n.d.). As soon as a case of child abuse is reported, the first and immediate criminal consequence is potentially losing whatever relationship the perpetrator had with the child followed by other long-term criminal consequences, depending on the severity of child abuse.
