Many individuals have decided not to speak what they want because of the risk to their security. As said in the readings provided, staying silent can sometimes be beneficial for one's safety, but being mute will eventually make him suffer from the pain of the words that cannot be spoken. The act of freeing oneself from the chains of silence holding them is highlighted in the papers provided. Expressing one's emotion is limited to audible sounds and visible actions that can significantly express one's feelings and emotions.
The atmosphere of the paper is somewhat severe and inspirational at the same time. The author clearly arranges her experience chronologically, going to different phases of her life where she slowly gains her courage to break her silence and put them into words and actions for others to see. Her choices of words are accurate and definitely show her skills as a writer. In the paper, she also mentioned that she is a black lesbian. It has been the cause of her being discriminated, and the reason for her to build courage. Given our society today, where racism and gender discrimination are considerably rampant, it is said that it is society's incurable disease. There is no judgment to this point. Speaking freely without having fear from anyone is the right of everyone.
