The purpose of the final reflection is for you to think about what you have learned this semester and to put it into the context of your professional practice. Your reflection also helps to inform course content and structure for upcoming semesters.
If it is easier for you, you may use the following outline to section your paper. There is no limit to how much you should write. What I look for in the final reflection is evidence of learning and the ability to apply principles, concepts, and theories learned in the course. Please format your paper in 12-point type, single-spaced.
We did a lot of work this semester! Let's think about it:
Resume review and screening candidates. Think back to the beginning of the semester and your experience in reviewing resumes. How do you think your experiences and learning in the classroom since that time have changed your perspective and abilities in resume review? What was the most important lesson(s) you took away from class from screening to selection of candidates?
The candidate experience. We're paying more attention to how our candidates feel when applying to our organizations--and we also know that much of the technology that we use to help us screen (through our Applicant Tracking Systems and online assessments) contributes to the candidate experience. The tricky part is that what makes our jobs more streamlined can impact the candidate experience. Tell me how you believe the candidate experience could be improved. Do employers need to use less technology? More personalized responses? More personalized interaction with the recruiter? Technology has helped us to improve efficiency and cut costs; are we making the wisest choices as organizations to use it so much? Triangulate your thoughts with facts and research that were discussed and presented in class.
Choose one of the two options for discussion point three:
Ban the Box -- Employers can exclude from hire those individuals who have been convicted of a drug-related offense (providing it is job-related). Another important fact to be considered is that estimates are upwards of 2/3 of the working age population has had a drug-related conviction. That's a lot of people and it has created applicant shortages in some areas. Is "Ban the Box" a good idea from the employer's perspective? Why or why not? What is the alternative? In your response, use information from class, your text, or appropriate media to substantiate your claim.
Hiring Veterans -- You will work in an economy that has an unprecedented number of Veterans seeking in the workplace and/or seeking work. In the past, we have used the Veteran's preference system to assist these individuals to assimilate into the civilian workforce. With post-9-11 Veterans, we have additional challenges with the sheer number of veterans returning to the civilian workforce, along with some Veterans who will identify as persons with disabilities. Think critically about how we, as human capital professionals, can effectively locate this talent and--more important--utilize this talent in our workforce. Use information from the text, our discussions and activities, and even outside information to substantiate your ideas.

The semester has been quite full of lessons to take away. I have learned many things in the semester, a vital war chest for me as I strive to be the best that I can be in my skills and knowledge acquisition. All the lessons learned have been concerning employees and how they form a crucial element for any organizational success and progress. It usually looks quite easy from the outside, but many things need to be considered when dealing with employees in any organizational setup.
Resume review and screening candidates
Staffing is quite a detailed exercise. The whole exercise usually starts at the job posting, where the vacancies and the respective requirements are placed and advertised on the most appropriate job sites. Thanks to technological development and advancements, these job openings can be placed on social media for a wider net. The essence is to ensure that as many applicants are captured as possible so that the organization can get the most talented of staff. I learned that selecting the suitable sites to place the job advertisement is as essential as capturing the best talent. Some social media sites have a greater audience, and that is where these placements need to be posted.
From there comes the review of resumes from the applicants. Reviewing the resumes is a whole exercise on its own. This is usually the screening state, which then leads to the selection of candidates. These CVs are checked against the qualifications needed for the posted job. Looking back at the beginning of the semester, I think this screening process can sometimes be quite challenging and confusing. There are instances when some applicants fail to qualify due to just one simple requirement that they do not have. It is tough luck.
