Many people now believe that information is power. However, what they do not recognize is that their behaviors are recorded by the electronic devices they use every day based on the information they search on the Internet. The primary question I usually ask myself is: where does the information recorded on social media platforms go? Will it at some point be used against me in the same manner it is used to determine the products and services I like?
The above questions bring me to two primary themes of human information behavior, namely big data and over-dependence on the Internet. Aldous Huxley, the British author of Brave New World, says that the technologies we use daily gather and store more information about users (Srinivasan, 2019). I concur with Huxley. For example, I believe that my smartphone contains more sensitive information about myself. In reality, I do not know who else can access my information without my consent. As companies use our data to predict things we like, the information can also be used to spread propaganda or exploit owners’ vulnerabilities.
