The evolution of science in the modern world has had positive and negative impacts on the society. It is among the major factors linked to globalization and the resultant economic development. In “Globalization (can you hear us now),” the author (name) argues that inventions such as mobile phones, computers, and other electronic devices enhance communication among people. Scientific knowledge makes life easier by simplifying complex processes, increasing organizations’ productivity, and enhancing the quality of life for people in the society. However, science not only have positive effects on our lives, it also has some negative effects, especially in the medical field. Medical science such as gene modification have raised concerns about society's attitude towards the disabled, the purpose of human reproduction, and what it means to “be born”. In “Brave New World,” medical science is pictured as a tool that takes over the productivity and the designing of people. The society uses technologies to develop people in different classes, such as Alphas, Betas, and Gammas; psychological technologies are applied to make humans more obedient and “robotic”; drugs are used to avoid people having negative thoughts… Huxley would agree that despite technology’s importance in the modern world, there is also a need for both the people and the government to control its impact on our society using the following solutions.
1. Raising public awareness of personal well-being and overall happiness can prevent people from taking drugs. In “Brave New World,” Huxley depicts a drug called “soma.” Though it is non-addictive and has no side effects, all the people rely on it to feel joy and avoid discomfort. In our society today, this kind of hallucinogen exists to excite the people who take it, but all of them have side effects. The reasons why people still want to take those drugs in the first place even though they know there are side effects varies, but in those people all wanted to escape to a joyful and comfortable place provided by the sensations of the drug. In “The Brave New World,” people have no family or close friends to connect with and people are always indifferent; people also have predestined identities and jobs designed for them from birth to death with nothing new, so they take soma to feel extreme emotions. In reality, we should learn from the fiction that families and friends need to be responsible and support each other; working spaces and schools should arrange exciting and fun activities from time to time so people do not need to use drugs to feel excited… Correspondingly, the government and agencies should put more funding on public counselors and educators to provide free care for everyone in need no matter their background.
