In any project, needs analysis is essential and helps determine non-negotiable requirements such as tools, skills, knowledge, systems, to name a few. Thus said, analyzing employee’s exposure to noise helps improve their communication and concentration, productivity, and reduce workplace accidents and injuries. Usually, exposure to high levels causes profound hearing loss – making it hard for an individual to hear high-frequency sounds, understand speech while at the same time impairing the ability to communicate (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Unfortunately, neither surgery nor hearing assistance can help correct such hearing losses. This study seeks to explore and determine ACME employee’s exposure to noise and provide recommendations and solutions.
In the machine shop, Robert Jones, who operates a stationary grinding wheel, is exposed to an average of 84.89 dBA over the eight working hours. Clara Tucker, who operates a drill press, is exposed to an average of 82.4 dBA. Rick Starnes and Jennie Gump, who operate metal shear, are exposed to 79.51 dBA and 82.1 dBA, respectively. Bernie Edwards, who works with a bench press, is exposed to 77.34 dBA. In the carpentry shop, the employees are exposed to an average of 85.33 dBA. On the other hand, in the electronic communication repair shop, the average newton per square meter for the building is 0.073425 N/m².
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's primary objective is to ensure that employees work safely and healthy. As such, the organization sets guidelines, provides training as well as enforces such standards. Usually, any sounds below 70 dBA are considered safe for any employee. Individuals exposed to sounds above or at 85 dBA are at a greater risk of hearing loss (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, 2020).
