Risk management and patient safety refers to a preventive practice that involves identification and correcting of system weaknesses that contribute to poor patient healthcare outcomes, claims, and adverse events (World Health Organization, 2017). An effective risk management and patient safety plan contains various components, with various stakeholders tasked with implementing each of the components. An example of such is the plan for Intermountain Healthcare, which has been implemented effectively over years.

Intermountain Healthcare is a healthcare organization that is driven by a mission of achieving excellence in providing healthcare services to communities within the Intermountain area (Intermountain Healthcare Quality & Patient Safety Plan, 2014). The mission of the organization is to give care to those living in communities around and within this region and have medical needs. The organization is committed to provide care to such regardless of whether or not they have the ability to pay for the services received. The Risk management and patient safety plan is composed of various components as shown below.
Components
The healthcare organization’s dimensions of care model have been designed to help the management in understanding the extraordinary care in different dimensions. The plan consists of six dimensions, and performance at each of these levels enables the company to move closer to realizing its ambition of Extraordinary Care. The dimensions are also highlighted in the organization’s vision, mission, and values statement.
The Experience; everyone is required to have this experience at the organization so as to help in achieving Extraordinary Care (Intermountain Healthcare Quality & Patient Safety Plan, 2014). Everyone within the healthcare facility is required to ensure that every patient can remember how well they were treated medically or otherwise.
The Six Actions; these show that everyone within the organization has a duty to play to ensure effective healing of patients. All stakeholders are linked together in provision of extraordinary care.
The Foundation; this forms the organization’s values, mission, and vision. The organization’s actions are based on the principles of its vision, mission, and values statement (Intermountain Healthcare Quality & Patient Safety Plan, 2014). They explain why the organization strives to treat people well, and pursuing ideals which ensure that patients enjoy an extraordinary experience. The components of the plan are shown below.
