What makes a great leader is a question that has been puzzling scholars for millennia. Divisions exist as to who would make a great leader and what they would have to possess that makes them stand out from the crowd. There are many theories put forward over the years that try to define a great leader; their main difference is the authors' perspective as to what makes a great leader.
The trait theory of leadership insists that great leaders must possess a particular set of traits. In contrast, behavioral theory states that leadership abilities can be acquired through learning and experience. The behavioral theory supports the idea that great leaders are made, and anyone can be a good leader (Kovach, 2018). However, the trait theory claims that only a particular set of individuals possessing specific traits can be good leaders.
In the modern-day, the behavioral theory of leadership is better applicable. The current workspace consists of a spectrum of cultures, sometimes drawn from all over the world. Diversity and globalization have become common in most organizations. This means that leaders need to be adaptive in their approach; they have to act quickly to react to many different problems involving people from different backgrounds.
