Innovative Organizational Behaviors at IDEO Organization
The competitive business environment compels organizations to adopt rapid innovation that would guarantee significant success, including a considerable market share. The objective is to ensure the target audiences’ needs, interests, and preferences are met, thus increasing brand recognition and value (Luamba et al., 2021). In turn, an organization easily beats competition by attracting and retaining an existing client base. IDEO is recognized as one of the leading product development firms globally. IDEO is arguably an innovative firm that has made multiple significant contributions in healthcare, technology, and the film industry. According to ABC News, the 25-foot mechanical whale in the film Free Willy, Smith’s Skis goggles, high-tech medical equipment, the first Apple computer mouse, and Nike sunglasses NEC computer screens are examples of innovations championed by IDEO (Neri, 2009). Product development is an example of innovative behavior, which includes redesigning products to match contemporary consumer expectations, including convenience. Without teamwork, innovation slows down because the workforce lacks harmony and the desire to learn from each other and is less likely to expose the innovative department to multiple ideas for evaluation and subsequent trial or implementation.
The other organizational behavior that can be borrowed from IDEO’s innovation model is the reliance on effective group leadership. In this case, ABC News reports that the team from IDEO disregarded hierarchy in their engagement. Socha (2019) asserts that hierarchical structures are discouraged because of the presence of chains of command that can impede effective time management. In other words, hierarchical structures affect faster decision-making, which ultimately hinders innovation, especially in a competitive environment. Hierarchical structures can be tied to the centralization of power, which is the case in ...
