Vehicles are part of the military weaponry system. From the military vehicles’ operational perspective, their effectiveness depends on the systems capability, readiness, reliability in mission and survivability. In many countries over the past ten years, the overall military preparedness and the associated readiness of the military vehicles and other military weaponry systems to meet effective operational requirements have been a point of discussion in many countries in the world. Some of the reasons for those issues include; first, the high cost for military weaponry and equipment including military vehicles which keep them to constantly review their budget. Secondly, there has been several environmental changes over the years which affect military weaponry effectiveness in operations, the increased terrorist activities, and increased terrorist attacks around the world. Thirdly, there has been a trend to advance and enhance capabilities in fewer military vehicles. The importance of vehicles readiness has been heightened by this trend, while increasing the difficulty of achieving it.
Availability and readiness is viewed as a function of reliability of the military vehicles in given missions and environments of operation. Reliability can be defined as the ability of a system to operate effectively under specified conditions for a stated period of time. For vehicles to be reliable, it depends on the design and the maintenance of the vehicle. The design that is less reliable requires more maintenance and will also be limited for operational use. Similarly, a vehicle that is not well maintained, for example, servicing, lubrication, replacements of various components, and failures inspection at a specific time for the specified design and operational environment will not perform efficiently and effectively and will require more preventive and corrective maintenance. On the other hand, the stated time taken to carry out corrective and preventive maintenance is also one of the major parameters for effective vehicle availability and readiness. This also depends on the in-service and the vehicle design, but additional measures are required besides those related to reliability.
In summary, increasing the reliability of the military vehicles and reducing the maintenance costs and time spent on corrective and preventive measures are the primary ways of increasing the military vehicle’s availability and readiness. For the best outcomes to be achieved, coordinated efforts are required both during design and maintenance. Modifications in design may be required in the case of in-service vehicles to improve the needed implementations and improve appropriate maintenance.
