Executive compensation is the financial rewards given to executives. The executive packages are approved and created by the board of directors. The purpose of this executive compensation is to give incentive to the executive team since they hold a lot of weight when it comes to the steering a company forward. As informed by Ingham & Thompson (2009), they oversee the firm’s strategy and operations and are generally associated with the success of a company.
Executive compensation is designed in a number of ways that ensure the executive is reimbursed well. There are cash compensations; deferred compensation, whereby the compensation is to be given at a certain date in future; and long-term investment plans which encompass stock and shares. There are also retirement packages and other executive perks. Generally, executive packages are given in line with company performance, and more profits equal more compensation, with losses warranting the opposite. However, it has become normal to see executives taking home hefty compensations while their companies are underperforming.
The question of executive compensation rubs different people in different ways. Some see it is an unfair payment for jobs collectively done, while others see it as a fare gratitude for excellent company financial outcomes.
