In the article “Mutual Perception of Russian and French Managers.” Maral Muratbekova-Touron explores the perception of Russian managers about French culture in the work environment and vice versa. The author argues that with increasing globalization in the business world, it is essential for managers to understand and cope with cross-cultural differences. Muratbekova-Touron proposes that managers on mutual transfers see a difference in their host and home cultures through various cultural dimensions (Muratbekova-Touron, 2011). The study uses a two-flow sample of Russian managers working in France and French managers working in Russia to investigate how each views their host culture. Results from the study reveal that examining Russian and French managers at work in France and Russia; respectively, they do not apply a similar cultural dimension when differentiating their cultures.
Muratbekova-Touron identified different characteristics used to explore cultural differences. Hierarchy is discussed by showing that Russian managers view French management as more horizontal than Russian, where it is more centralized and has strong respect or submission to authority (Muratbekova-Touron, 2011). In terms of time, Russian managers are short-term oriented while French managers are long-term. French managers also rarely get late. Neutral vs. emotional shows that French workers can smile at colleagues while they hate them, but Russians will not show warmth when they do not like a colleague. However, the Russian work environment is warmer than the French. In human nature, Russian managers are viewed as wanting to control and overly supervise their subordinates, while French managers are more organized, polite, and responsible.
