Lisa Heap’s “Women Don’t Speak Up Over Workplace Harassment Because No One Hears them if They Do” shows why numerous cases of sexual harassment against women go unnoticed. Many women do not report instances of workplace sexual harassment since it might result in career suicide, threats to complainants’ employment, exclusion, or ostracism. According to the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) survey of 2018, about 81% of employees in the information, telecommunication, and media industries reported sexual harassment in the last five years. Additionally, the Victorian Trades Hall Council (VHTC) reported that approximately 64% of women experienced gendered violence or sexual harassment in their workplaces in 2016 (Heap, 2018). Victims of sexual harassment prefer not to report these issues since they have little faith that their organizations will do something to address them. The VHTC further reported that about 19% of females who experience sexual harassment left their job since they did not feel safe (Heap, 2018). Consequently, gendered violence and inequality have become normalized in the workplaces.
