Introduction
In society, gender roles define how people act, speak, dress, and conduct themselves. Traditionally, women and men had specific roles; men were perceived to be the providers while women were the caretakers of homes. However, in recent times, the rigidity associated with gender roles has been identified as the reason why people, especially women, fail to fulfill their potential. This paper examines how women have challenged gender roles at the working place, in politics, and in sexual cases related to dressing code.
In the 1990s, the workplace was referred to as an inhospitable place for women due to multiple forms of gender inequalities. The inequalities were reflected in complex organizational structures that paid men more than women and ignored women for managerial positions. However, in 2019, the proportion of women in senior management roles globally grew to 29%, the highest number ever recorded (Ndekugri 41).
