Managing individuals within a business can be challenging due to the variance in the individuals' personalities, learning styles as well as preferences. Most managers, therefore, find it difficult to perform their management functions mostly due to inadequate training and lack of the required values and awareness on how to interact and manage ineffectively. Some techniques and skills are easy to implement and teach, but the attitudes and values are hard for the managers to learn (Certo et.al,2015).
The failure to recognize the employees as people is one of the biggest problems managers have in the workplace. According to Certo et.al (2015), managers fail to understand that building effective relationships with the employees is a critical effort towards the success of the business. Taking an interest in the employees’ lives and interacting with them makes them feel appreciated and part of the business which helps them deliver efficiently. Recognizing that the workers are people who have lives outside the business that could affect their performance, enables the manager to address the employees' needs, life events and their moods, creating a healthy business environment.
Befriending employees is problematic in the workplace, and it makes it hard to separate the personal relationships with the working relationship. Befriending the workers strikes an imbalance where the employees lack respect for the authority of the management, or the managers fail to establish and comply with the workers' boundaries (Certo et.al,2015). Managers should, therefore, seek to build and develop relationships that are within the business environment.
