Emotional intelligence (EI) is a critical requirement in the workplace and determines individual behavior. EI is the ability of people to understand and manage their emotions and those around them (Miao et al., 2018). Individuals with a high level of emotional intelligence understand their feelings and how their actions and emotions affect others. Individuals with high emotional intelligence have specific characteristics, including empathy, the ability to embrace change, and high-self motivation. Emotional intelligence is important in the workplace since it allows people to embrace change, manage change, and create collaborative relationships (Rivers et al., 2020). It also allows individuals to make sound decisions which are important for higher organizational growth. High emotional intelligence allows individuals to perform better and accomplish different goals and objectives. Emotional intelligence is also fundamental in conflict resolution, a critical issue in most organizations. Therefore, it is necessary to improve emotional intelligence to achieve professional and organizational goals. The paper uses Goleman's improvement plan to address emotional intelligence improvement.
Building Social Awareness
Social awareness is the first aspect of Goleman's improvement plan. It is one's ability to empathize and take perspective with others regardless of their cultures or backgrounds. Social awareness is critical since it determines how an individual interacts with others in the organization (Lubbadeh, 2020). I build social awareness by examining my emotions, moods, and actions. Social awareness is critical since it allows individuals to build sustainable relationships, which are fundamental for organizational growth. Managing emotions is essential since they impact interactions, behaviors, and moods. Everyone has emotions; however, the main aspect is how to manage them. Whenever people in the organization do not control emotions, the workplace may be unsustainable due to constant engagement. Therefore, building social awareness is necessary for my professional growth and promoting organizational performance. Besides, I develop empathy for others by understanding their emotions and examining what they go through. After which, it becomes easy to create a proper and sustainable relationship with them.
Communicating with Empathy
Empathy is also a critical element of Goleman's improvement plan. Empathy is the ability to understand how an individual feels (Miao et al., 2018). It is vital in the workplace since it allows the employees to interact adequately and build positive working relationships.
