Managing the Intelligence Community in the 21st Century
The primary objectives of the Intelligence Community (IC) are to provide warnings about potential national security threats, reduce security uncertainties, and enhance the security of American citizens. The IC promotes the interaction between the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and other agencies, private and public industries collaboration, cyber intelligence operations, and intelligence oversight. In addition, it fosters legislative appropriations, technology infusion, and global threat management (Lecture Week 12, 2022). The top three intelligence priority issues facing the IC over the next two and a half decades are cybersecurity issues, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and terrorism.
A weapon of mass destruction refers to a chemical, nuclear, biological, radiological, or other things that can be used to harm a significant number of individuals. In September 2018, the DNI said that technology, terrorism, economics, and crime are the primary challenges that confront the United States of America’s (USA’s) IC (Lecture Week 12, 2022). In particular, the threat emanating from the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction is increasing as non-states and terrorists can cause catastrophic destruction to national security. That is why the IC must always be on the lookout to ensure that they get the information and locate any weapon of mass destruction that might be intended to be used by extremists. On that note, the IC, DNI, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and other security agencies must have effective prevention measures to identify threats posed by weapons of mass destruction that might be smuggled into the country.
Cybersecurity is another problem that the IC must prioritize to eliminate. Since this issue extends far beyond the USA boundaries, something must be done to detect and safeguard the American information technology infrastructure.
