Early Theories of Motivation
Some early theories of motivation include Maslow's needs hierarchy theory, ERG theory, Herzberg's hygiene theory, and McClelland's theory of need. Maslow's needs hierarchy is a theory that groups human needs into five levels: physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization. Unfulfilled needs drive employees, while fulfilled ones cease being motivators. ERG is a needs theory comprising three crucial needs: existence, relatedness, and growth (McShane & Von Glinow, 2010). This theory marginally improved the understanding of human needs.
Herzberg's hygiene theory holds that only job characteristics motivate employees, while hygiene factors prevent dissatisfaction. Herzberg also argued that employees experience job satisfaction when fulfilling growth and esteem needs. Lastly, McClelland's theory of need holds that an individual's needs can be strengthened through reinforcement, social conditions, and learning. The needs are power, affiliation, and achievement.
