An audience that may benefit from the Stand Your Ground Policy presented in week 2 is the elderly. The elderly will benefit significantly from understanding what Stand Your Ground Policy is all about. They will understand that they can protect themselves when they are under attack without having to fear that they will be prosecuted for their actions. According to Blowers (2015), the proportion of the elderly in today’s society is greater than ever before and is increasing at a faster rate compared to other segments of the population.
Moreover, the frequency of mistreatment and abuse of the elderly is expected to increase with time as the population ages. Blowers (2015) also points out that more and older people are interacting with the judicial system and this interaction is expected to increase. Therefore, it is vital that the elderly comprehend Stand Your Ground Policy as it would help them navigate the criminal justice system better. By understanding what the policy entails, the elderly would be safer as they would not hesitate to protect themselves in case of an attack. Also, the law would be there to protect them when they act within their rights.
There are characteristics specific to the elderly that may influence the delivery of the message. The elderly are more characterized more with communication disorders compared to other segments of the population. As informed by Yorkston, Bourgeois, & Baylor (2010), while people of all ages are affected by communication disorders, it is the older people who are more vulnerable. Therefore, age-related conditions affect the delivery of a message. Hearing, vision and writing problems are more prevalent among the elderly.
