In the change management simulation, as the Director of Product Innovation, you were faced with an
urgent business need to implement strategic change at Spectrum Sunglass Company. As a middle
manager, you lacked formal authority (power) and had to rely on influence to gain support to implement
the change. Success required you to accurately diagnose the situation, build and maintain credibility, and
develop a plan that included using the appropriate change levers or actions at the right time. Having
completed the Change Management Simulation, prepare a 6-page paper that:
• Analyzes how effectively you diagnosed the situation including identifying individuals who could
be early adopters and those that were resisters. How helpful were factors such as the formal
organizational hierarchy and social network information?
• Discusses the strategy you developed to influence organizational members to mobilize and move
them to adopt the change initiative. Identify and describe the change theories and/or models that
influenced your strategy and their effectiveness.
• Evaluates why you were successful or unsuccessful as a change agent and middle manager
without formal authority including what you did well and what were your missteps. Analyze when
and why did you gained or lost credibility, and its impact on your success.
• Reflects on the three important lessons learned or insights gained from the simulation about
being an effective change leader, and identify one action you will take to enhance your future
effectiveness in leading change.

Organizational change is not easy. It causes anxiety, and this is mainly because of the fear of failure. Resistance from employees is also another factor that makes the management of a company avoid instances that introduce change initiatives. However, one thing that holds constant is the fact that change is necessary and also inevitable. Every business has to consider changing the way it operates if they are to remain relevant in whichever industry they operate. But, another issue that compounds the difficulty of change is when a person lacks the authority to make the change happen. With authority, it is easier to have employees conform to a change by making it a necessity. Without authority, one has to rely on their influence over employees. This compounds the issue as it forces managers to rely on the application of the four stages of change management, which include change awareness, interest, trial, and adoption. As many managers will admit, using authority often has its hurdles and often leads to resistance because the change initiative appears to be the management’s. However, when influence is used, employees feel involved, and the change initiative has a higher chance of succeeding. Influence takes away the manager’s position and uses their relationship with employees. If this relationship is strong, the change initiative is bound to work. Provided herein is an instance where influence instead of authority served as the main driver of a change initiative in Spectrum Sunglass Company (SSC).
