Management philosophies remain integral to business organizations based on their impacts on respective growth and market share indices. With highly dynamic operational environments, managers are obliged to stick to philosophies they understand can sail their entities through the changes with no ill impacts on the performance indices. The challenge is bigger when it comes to multinational, progressive, and highly profitable organizations. AT&T is one such organization that has enhanced its market share indices even amidst shifting market trends. That has raised questions about the specific aspects of the management philosophy at AT&T that has kept them grounded on vertical growth. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the goal work philosophy at AT&T with special emphasis put on the organization’s diversification into the wireless technologies landscape. To help it grow into business segments that bear relevance to contemporary needs, AT&T management has emphasized a sufficient philosophy whose strengths in employee motivation could redefine the future of management philosophy.
Summary
AT&T Inc. is an American multinational conglomerate company whose principal identity is rooted in the telecommunications industry. AT&T history dates back to 1885 with its founder being Alexander Graham Bell (Rychlak, 2014). The fact that AT&T was the first in the industry means that it monopolized phone service in the US and Canada for the better portions of the 19th and 20th centuries. The emergence of competition in the mid-20th century meant that AT&T had to undergo notable mutation especially in 1982 when the government broke its monopoly. The company has since grounded its operations in diversification (Dolon, 2016). It is also an innovative company whose imprints are evident in multiple prospects throughout American telecommunication and entertainment.
The goal-work philosophy at AT&T remains its most vital tool since indulgence in contemporary operations. Superficially, goal-work is a management philosophy that majors its success on employee growth and motivation (Brigham & Houston, 2013). The philosophy is grounded on the understanding that employees can help in achieving the ultimate organizational vision if they are motivated and geared to work towards specific goals. A deeper analysis of AT&T operations reveals that it is an organization that barely prospers on employing new and technical talent (Rychlak, 2014). Instead, it works to nurture its available workforce to be efficient and able to mutate no matter the challenges in the operational environment. The philosophy has been efficient if growth indices and successful diversification into newer market segments by AT&T are anything to believe.
