Strategic training and development initiatives are educational actions that a company designs and implements in ensuring that its business strategies are achieved by enhancing job performance. Growth of sales, innovation, cost base management, and succession planning are the key strategies focused on by McCormick & Company. The company also operates within a specific set of values based on ethical and high-performance values in addition to concern between and among employees, teamwork, and innovation which guarantees ultimate success.
If I were the company’s vice president of learning, I would create training and development initiatives that would be in line with its key strategies. That is what the Multiple Management Board (MMB) leadership program adopted by the company is all about (Bingham & Galagan, 2007). This program would ensure that employees are trained and tuned towards the company’s strategic direction to ensure positive business results. Additionally, providing development opportunities where employees can communicate, grow, and understand career opportunities for the company and their personal growth. This strategy would ensure that the needs of their current job positions as well as those that will come up at different job positions in the future are met. Retention has been and is still a major challenge for most employers in any given company like McCormick. To ensure adaptable learning that minimizes the effects of potential expert loss, performance-based training and development would be a desirable business strategy. Adopting an initiative where new employees are able to learn from seasoned employees in performing job duties would be a hands-on approach that would curb the obstacle of retention and contribute to a turnover.
