Social media has opened up several doors, presenting new approaches that help people explore information, expanding knowledge (Gaál et al., 2015). Managers can learn how to utilize online platforms to meet their objectives effectively.
Social Media in the Work Place
Social media is at times viewed as a destructive form of communication that affects business organizations. Communication using social media, especially in workplaces can expose employees to risk of termination caused by misuse of these platforms (Gaál et al., 2015). Media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, can help organizations expand their market. However, there is the need for close monitoring and clear policies in place to manage communication in workplaces. The many communication barriers can be addressed to enable the organizations access the numerous advantages of these social media platforms (Schultz et al., 2015).
Social Media Advantages
If the organization can grant employees access to social media page, this will boost their morale. According to Gaál et al., (2015), social media build friendship and push employees to feel more devoted. Social media can motivate and promote team spirit; one can easily communicate to a broader audience using social platforms (Schultz et al., 2015).
Sharing important data and information instantly without having to send several emails are some of the advantages of using social media. Advantages of using social media goes beyond just social interaction, it also contributes to increased profit for the organization since it acts as a good marketing platform (Gaál et al., 2015). The benefits of social media are invaluable if one convey clear messages, he will have the chance to market its products (Schultz et al., 2015). Social media is an online application that enables users to engage in open conversation and socialize with a wider circle of friends (Schultz et al., 2015).
Social media disadvantages.
It is unfortunate that those who communicate using social media can be exposed to several risks at the organization level. Sensitive information can easily be leaked online putting the whole organization at a greater risk. Many employees can be distracted by social media while at work and it can create barriers instead of enhancing communication (Schultz et al., 2015). Verbal intonations represent the tone of the users, determining how people perceive information. However, such tone can be lost in translation when communicating online. That is why oral communication is preferable because through body language can easily help translate the user tone (Gaál et al., 2015).
Most of the time, words are easily misconstrued as words are taken out of context. The problem with social media is that once you send the message, it would instantly be accessed, you cannot retrieve it easily, and these are some of the barriers that make it difficult...
