Karen Horney’s theory of Neurotic Needs states that neurosis, which is the inability to adapt and the inclination to experience extreme negative thoughts and behavior, results from anxiety from interpersonal relationships (Kaufman, 2020). According to her, neurosis or anxiety results from the needs to move toward others for affirmation, and acceptance needs to move away from others and move against others. These needs result in compliant individuals who crave attention and approval, withdrawn individuals who want to be independent, and aggressive and antisocial behavior develop among people who need to control and manipulate others. Horney recommended understanding how various neurotic needs affect one’s feelings and behavior, reframing your thinking, practicing mindfulness, focusing on relationships, and therapy to deal with neurosis (Kaufman, 2020).
