Dr. Horney developed a theory of neurosis, which has been adopted widely in the psychology field. She claims that neurosis develops from childhood as primary anxiety caused by distorted interpersonal relationships (Horney, 2013). A child’s early environment dictates their compulsive actions to certain dangers. This makes them lose touch with their natural self. Consequently, Horney believed that the significant cause of neurosis was the surroundings rather than intrinsic factors. Her theory suggests that people need warm and supportive relationships for self-realization and healthy growth.
