The quote is extraordinary and has a deep meaning. It talks about our tendency to merely focus on the surface of matters over time and fail to recognize them. Humans today are so involved and consumed by the surface of what they see that they fail to acknowledge the depth of the matter. The gravity of the situation is far more important than its surface.
Instead of using the older and more regular approach where a person fails to recognize the deeper meaning of matters, it is wise to look at all the elements of a situation, a personality, or any other event that has a significant impact on your life. It will always help a person divide the situation into different components and handle it in a more suitable way. Similarly, if an argument or disagreement occurs, one can understand the underlying reasons for the behavior others manifest. Once you understand these underlying reasons, you will notice your life-changing, and your opinion about several matters will also change for the better.
The point of James Baldwin's quote appears to be simple: not everything is what it seems on the surface. Again, we make the mistake of just reading the words without focusing on the spaces that speak volumes. Our experiences and decisions are not reflected in what we think we fear or love but in what we fear and love.
