The history of slavery has been documented in plenty of texts, where each has a different story to tell. Various authors have set out to write narrations based on real-life stories that took place during the slavery era. Among the famous historical figures that people have written about is Tubman Harriet. Therefore, this paper will focus on the similarities and differences between the depictions of Harriet's heroism, as outlined in the Water Dancer and Harriet Tubman.
Both the Water Dancer and the Harriet paper describes the story, Harriet Tubman, as a person who had played a substantial role in helping the people around her. The Water Dancer highlights Harriet as a character that Hiram meets during his adventures in the Underground Railroad. The activities of the underground rail were kept secret, and therefore, Harriet proved to be a heroine by knowing the operations of the area. Hiram discovers that Harriet also possesses the power of conduction, which enables the earth to fold like a fabric (Coates, 2019). As well, the power can be used to transport people to long distances. In this novel, Harriet is described as an escapee, and the people call the character Moses. It is through her power of conduction that she is able to travel for long distances. As well, the Harriet paper depicts Harriet as a great hero since she was able to overcome both the physical and mental challenges that were subjected to the slaves. She chose to seek freedom by running to the north and ends up showing her heroic acts by saving her people by working as a conductor. Therefore, both texts depict Harriet as a heroine that most people looked up to.
The water Dancer depicts Harriet as a girl who was born into slavery, but through the inspiration of Abe, she was able to seek freedom, in turn escaping slavery. Her power of conduction made things easy for her, and she was able to transport her family away from slavery. On the other hand, the Harriet paper depicts Harriet as a character who went through plenty of challenges during her childhood. At some point, she was hit hard on the head and ended up having a dent on her skull. Regardless of being a slave, she attempted to live a normal life by getting married to John. However, the marriage did not work since John was not willing to escape slavery with Harriet. Such is a depiction of some of the sacrifices that Harriet had to make for the sake of her freedom. Hence, in the water dancer, the author does not present Harriet as a character who went through many challenges. Such is a contrast in the Harriet paper, which shows how difficult her childhood and young adulthood was.
These differences in both works have an effect on the meaning of both works, which makes the texts create a new view on the history of slavery. The Water Dancer does not depict the character of Moses to have undergone plenty of challenges. Such a depiction raises a question as to how strict it was to escape from the arms of slavery.
