Literary Analysis of a Short Story (20%)
Your second major assignment is an essay responding to any one (or two) of the short stories we discussed in class. If you choose to compare/contrast two stories, you may do so, as long as the stories have a similarity of characters, theme, tone, or subject-matter (preferably choose from the sections that the Unit has been divided into). The focus in either choice must be narrow and specific, which you slowly uncover in the body of your essay. (Choosing a wide or general theme is not a good idea, because it forces you to state the obvious.)
Your paper must have a clear thesis stated early, evidence and reasoning to support it throughout the body of the essay, and analysis of the significance of this reading to an understanding of the story. Evidence must include quotes and paraphrasing from the story with page numbers noted in MLA style. Include a Works Cited page, listing your two secondary and one primary source, the story, in MLA style.
Method:
Your essay is an analysis of the stories that explores your unique point of view. You are arguing about a specific idea that the reader may not have thought of and urging the reader to understand and agree with you. Therefore, focusing on a smaller topic will be helpful. For example, a poor thesis will state:
“'The Story of an Hour' is about a wife who rejoices her husband's death, while ‘Hills Like White Elephants’ is about a bad relationship.”
As opposed to a good thesis that will state:
“Both 'The Story of an Hour' and ‘Hills Like White Elephants’ have central female characters that are trapped in a patriarchal society, but while ‘The Story of an Hour’ ends in Louise’s tragic demise, I will claim that ‘Hills Like White Elephants’ ends with Jig finding her freedom.”
A good analysis concentrates on details: you should quote portions of the story to show how the text supports your thesis. Then you should offer comments and analysis that show how the portion you’re interpreting contributes to the work as a whole. As a general rule, “say more about less”: limit your focus to a small enough topic so that you can cover it in detail in this brief paper.
Follow this format for rough drafts for conference:
Introduction/Thesis Statement
Bullet points of paragraphs that follow with at least one sample quote using MLA format.
Your essays will be graded on the following factors:
A strong thesis statement with an essay that explores the thesis in its entirety
Grammar and MLA formatting
Quotes from your primary text and your secondary scholarly sources
Length (4-5 pages)

LITERARY ANALYSIS
The two short stories “The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin and “Hills like White Elephants” Ernest Hemingway are different, and they tell different events. However, if these stories are analyzed well, it is possible to trace some similarities between the two. Through the use of these two short stories, the authors have been able to communicate different themes to the readers. The way the authors have depicted their central ideas is different from what other authors craft in their stories. Since different authors have written these stories, Kate Chopin and Ernest Hemingway have used different styles to communicate different themes to the readers. Although these two short stories are similar, such that they illustrate issues that affect relationships, marriages, love, freedom, dreams, they are different when it comes to the central theme brought out by the authors. For example, Ernest Hemingway uses symbolism to illustrate the effects of the lack of communication in a relationship. On the other and, Kate Chopin uses characterization to demonstrate the importance of independence in marriages, and sometimes marriages exist because of love and kindness. Still, in the long run, there is exploitation and oppression.
Both Ernest Hemingway and Kate Chopin had different beliefs while writing the two stories. According to De, Kate Chopin describes feminism and serves as the proof of life phenomena that examines the change of woman thought about family and marriage. Additionally, Kate believed that a woman's strength was determined by her ability to make decisions away from a society that was dominated by men. Kate Chopin felt that women were supposed to have their freedom, especially from the expectation of society when it came to motherhood and marriage (Chopin 1). According to Kate Chopin, women were supposed to have their political views and thoughts. Women were also supposed to be involved in making political decisions. On the other hand, Ernest Hemingway that people needed to be truthful in every means possible (Hemingway 1). Ernest emphasizes the importance of communication in every relationship especially from women. According to Hemingway, truth assists people in realizing their vision in society.
Both short stories are based on account of couples who are spouses and partners. The love relationships of these couples are convoluted because of some issues or some dilemmas. Kate Chopin and Ernest Hemingway have critically analyzed these problems. For example, in the story "Hills like White Elephants," The author narrates the story of a man and a woman who disagreed on a conflict that could potentially affect their entire relationship. Although never explicitly stated, this conflict can be assumed to be an operation, more specifically, an abortion. Hemingway continually dances around the subject, being careful never to give too much information out, and he leaves it to the audience's imagination to potentially piece together the story and where it's headed. His use of vast symbolism throughout gives the reader a sense that the woman, Jig, might choose not to have the abortion (Hemingway 2). The young woman is reluctant to decide because ...
