The Similarities and Differences Between A Short History of Indians in Canada and My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Literature gives power hidden in words (Frye). Sometimes, it takes a great effort to unleash its secrets. The short story entitled, “A Short History of Indians in Canada” and the film, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” tells a story about freedom and acceptance in different ways.
The short story concerns the tragedy of the dying Indian Civilization in the middle of an emerging civilization. Thomas King used a metaphor comparing birds to the Native Indians who fly around the city but they seem like they cannot fit in the city full of skyscrapers. The setting was a night which makes it difficult for birds to roam around (King). Native Indians are like these birds in the way that they are identical to nomadic and migratory creatures. The falling feathers of the birds symbolize the prejudice of the non-native people towards them. Thomas King may have used this to portray that these birds have an impending death in the city. It is not necessarily the Natives’ death physically but it may mean the death of their culture and natural life through their adaptation with the white civilization. This short story portrays the limited freedom that the Natives enjoy in Canada and the resolve of acceptance that they must possess in order to adapt to the emerging society.
On the other hand, the film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, talks about freedom and acceptance in the context of love and culture. This is about a Greek family who settled in the United States.
