The Calf Hatching Play

Please read the brief play called, "The Calf-Hatching" by Hans Sachs. Hans Sachs was a shoemaker and writer from the prosperous town of Nuremberg in the first of the sixteenth century. He wrote numerous plays to be performed at carnival (Mardi Gras), a time of lots of eating, drinking and partying. Sachs wrote some 2000 plays to be performed at carnival and they are usually satirical and humorous but with a moral message. This play is no mirror of reality but is more like our own television sit-coms, and suggests important themes and topics. It's a satire!

1. What does the play suggest about female roles in the household? What were a women's duties? Does the play suggest they were easy or difficult to carry out? What were a woman's behavioral expectations? How should they act toward their husbands? Does Gretta behave properly? If not why not?
2. What does the play suggest about male roles in the household. What qualities should a male head of household have? Does Hans stack up?
3. What is the role of the priest in the story? Does the priest set the social norms, or does Hans Sachs mock the priest?
4. What is the meaning of the calf-hatching? What does Hans' attempt to hatch a calf tell us about the story's moral?
5. Can you think of any comparisons with the piece by Erasmus especially in terms of expectations of male behavior?
