Article Summary of Mary Carolan’s Article entitled:
"Diabetes’ nurse educators’ experiences of providing care for women, with gestational diabetes mellitus, from disadvantaged backgrounds."

This study conducted by Mary Carolan focused on the experiences (and perspectives) of a Diabetes’ nurse educator in teaching Gestational Diabetes Mellitus or GDM to women coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. Based on reliable and credible statistical data gathered from both high- and low-income countries, the author started her main point by stating the health issues related with GDM. This includes, however subtle, birth defects and abnormalities in the children with mothers that have GDM. However, she firmly believes that the disproportionate allocation of resources (including knowledge) to women in low-income societies makes them at greater risk of having and misunderstanding the effects of GDM as compared to those from high-income communities.
Low-income countries are said to affect more mothers and children due to physical, economic, social, and cultural barriers such as "low income, poor diet, obesity, and ethnic minority status" (Carolan, 2013). Due to this, she dedicated this research in trying to understand the perceptions of a GDM educator and providing suggestions on how to maximize the learning potential of these lectures.
She also conducted this research to add to the existing pool of knowledge in the subject matter through the educators’ point of view. She believed that this would help the development of better and more efficient programs for these women, which in turn, would assist them in mastering self-management techniques to mitigate GDM (e.g. optimal glycemic control during pregnancy). Furthermore, she believed that, if the program is successful, the inevitable increase in the educators’ workloads and participant’s frustration - caused by the inefficiency of the services in the region - could be reduced.
Specifically, the author wanted the research to be able to contribute "to ongoing studies in the Western area of Melbourne" (Carolan, 2013). However, she also believed that the research is ‘transferrable,' in a way that other GDM nurses from different contexts can make use of its findings. The study used a method that employed in-depth interviews with six (6) diabetes educators. Each interview lasted for about 45...
