Stedman-Smith, M., DuBois, C. L., & Grey, S. F. (2015). Hand hygiene performance and beliefs among public university employees. Journal of Health Psychology, 20(10), 1263-1274.
Summary
The quantitative research carried out by Stedman-Smith, DuBois, and Grey (2015) states that workers have a persuasive focus to moderate communicable infections such as influenza, the common cold, and gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. According to the authors, companies face challenges due to costs incurred as a result of overtime direct or indirect effects of these diseases. Suggestively, Stedman-Smith, DuBois, and Grey (2015) justify that the workplace provides a suitable scenario that can be used to access community members, considering that employers are highly concerned about the workforce wellbeing. The researchers administered a survey to a random sample of workers based in the Midwestern US University to investigate the hand hygiene performance and beliefs. The purpose of the research was to use a large number of workers in the institution to determine if a tailored model of the TPB provides insights on the self-reported hand hygiene beliefs and practices, and self-reported hygiene conduct, infectious illnesses, and job absenteeism due to associated factors. Also, the researchers wanted to develop insights on how interventions can be made in similar settings. In the study, Stedman-Smith, DuBois, and Grey (2015) investigate the capacity of a model raised by the ideology of a planned behavior to predict hand hygiene practices and beliefs, by employing a structural equation approach. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) has been employed to address public health interventions since the mid-1980s. The investigation involved an online survey of 1600 full-time workers. The TPB-related constructs included a personalized approach to hand hygiene practices and four beliefs, which are the essence of upholding hand hygiene, normative beliefs of other people, and behavioral control. The questions had validity and reliability considering their previous success in similar health care programs. Stedman-Smith, DuBois, and Grey (2015) concluded that hand hygiene conducts monitored the instances of illnesses associated with the respiratory tract and gastrointestinal infections, and the findings supported hand hygiene improving interventions.
Analysis
Stedman-Smith et al. (2014) states that each year communicable diseases that result in a poor hand hygiene, such as acute respiratory infections (ARIs), Influenza-like illness (ILI), and gastrointestinal (GI) infections have become an area of concern in the society. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada (2012), hand washing and disinfection is effective in reducing the spread of these diseases. Adherence to hand hygiene is recommended for preventing transmission of microorganisms in a public setting. Stedman-Smith, DuBois, and Grey (2015) purpose of the study; to provide insights on how hand hygiene can be improved ...
