The text begins with the description of the small man in his early fifties and with receding gray hair who wanted to sign the required the forms with the mortician and makes requests for what he expected. In The Near Departed by Richard Matheson, Arnold visits a mortician and urged him to do the best for his wife Marie, and the mortician was surprised as he believed, but Arnold pointed out that cost was unimportant. Arnold who was a small man reiterated that he wanted the best and indicated that his wife lived her life the best she could. The mortician also reassured the small man that everything would be perfect. To the middle aged man whose wife died since his wife was beautiful, young and was loved by everybody her, it was only befitting that she got a perfect sendoff.
