How Can the Public Combat the Spread of COVID-19?
How can the public stop the spread of coronavirus? COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease that originated from Wuhan, Hubei province in late 2019. Indeed, it kills people by damaging their lungs, which makes them unable to breathe. Some of the symptoms of the coronavirus include shortness of breath, dry cough, fever, tiredness, sore throat, headache, diarrhea, and chest pains. In February 2020, the COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) since it had entered many territories worldwide and up to now no vaccine has been developed to contain it. Health institutions and governments have come up with various strategies to curb the further spread of coronavirus, which will be the primary point of discussion in this paper.
The two primary measures for preventing the spread of coronavirus are maintaining social distance and washing hands regularly (Harvard Medical School, 2020). People are encouraged to use soap and running water when washing their hands for a minimum of twenty seconds. Also, they can use hand sanitizers with a minimum alcohol content of about 60%, which they are supposed to rub in their hands until it dries. Social distance is another most effective strategy to reduce the high rate of coronavirus infection since it ensures that individuals one meter apart so that they do not inhale droplets that an infected person produces when he or she coughs or sneezes. Consequently, individuals are discouraged from public gatherings with over fifteen people and are highly encouraged to stay at home.
The WHO advises the public to wear face masks, eat healthy diets, and to use cashless payment methods (WHO, 2020). Despite lockdowns and cessations of movements, some people in essential business sectors are allowed to work. For this reason, individuals are encouraged to wear face masks so that they do not inhale the virus from the air, particularly when a person who is infected sneezes.
