Summarizing the Story. Literature & Language Essay

Essay Instructions:

Using at least four distinct online English-language news sources, including news or background articles, write an essay to summarize a current news story. Before you submit the complete essay, you may choose to submit the one-paragraph introduction, together with a complete reference list of the sources you will use for the essay, and wait for the teacher’s advice for improvement.
Plan of Organization
Introduction In one paragraph of 50 to 100 words, introduce the news story in very general terms. The purpose of the introduction is to introduce, not summarize, so you should avoid making specific factual statements that require sources. Save the specifics for the body paragraphs!
Body Paragraphs In one paragraph of 50 to 100 words for each source, select and summarize whatever specific facts, ideas, statements, etc., from the source that you think will help your reader follow and understand the news story. You should avoid long direct quotes; instead, you should put as much as you can into your own words. In the first sentence of each body paragraph, you must cite the source you are using for that paragraph, in the style used in the lesson on citations.
Conclusion In one paragraph of 50 to 100 words, give your personal response to the news story. Start with a hook: The most interesting part of this story is that…, or An important aspect of this story is that…, or The strangest thing about this story is that… or This story leaves some unanswered questions….
Reference List Immediately below the conclusion, provide a complete list of references, in alphabetical order, that includes all of your sources. The reference list cannot include sources that you do not actually cite in the body paragraphs of your essay. The citations must match the corresponding references using author names. Read and follow the lessons on references and citations.
Expectations
The response is an essay of 300-600 words that follows the plan of organization and adequately summarizes the news story. The writing shows consistent control of basic language conventions (grammar, usage, syntax, punctuation, spelling, capitalization) and sentence structure, so that the intended meaning is always clear, with few errors.

Summarizing the Story
The rapid spread of coronavirus has significantly affected the education sector adversely worldwide. The disease was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a pandemic in February 2020 since it has no cure and continues to enter new territories every day. Many governments have ordered the closure of educational institutions as one way to curb the spread of COVID-19. Coronavirus has also made it hard for some people to enroll in online education since they have lost their jobs, inaccessibility to technology, or their employers have reduced their pay. For this reason, the coronavirus pandemic has led to the closure of schools in many affected countries, and no one knows when education institutions will be reopened, particularly those in low and middle-income nations that have poor technology infrastructure.
Andrew DePietro’s article depicts that the coronavirus pandemic has adversely affected the higher educational institutions in the United States of America (USA) (DePietro, 2020). Universities and colleges have been obliged to close down their operations and to convert to online courses. However, many of these institutions are struggling to implement the right technology infrastructure to enhance Internet learning due to the lack of relevant resources, such as finances. Consequently, COVID-19 has made education unaffordable to a specific population, particularly those without an Internet connection and electronic devices.
Hans Sievertsen and Simon Burgess assert that the global lockdown caused by COVID-19 has disrupted students’ learning and might increase inequalities for individuals affected in the long run (Burgess & Sievertsen, 2020). Numerous nations have shut down all educational institutions in an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus. However, policymakers are faced with the dilemma of extending the policy to shut down schools to reduce the spread of the disease and save lives or opening them to prevent the economy from falling apart. Although many schools have implemented online learning, homeschooling is not the best since it can hinder students’ social skills and awareness.
Goolam Mohamedbhai makes it clear that COVID-19 has destabilized the efforts made by the developing countries to improve their education sector, and it is likely to cause an increase in inequalities, graduate unemployment, and low-quality ...
