The rapid spread of coronavirus has significantly affected the education sector adversely worldwide. The disease was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a pandemic in February 2020 since it has no cure and continues to enter new territories every day. Many governments have ordered the closure of educational institutions as one way to curb the spread of COVID-19. Coronavirus has also made it hard for some people to enroll in online education since they have lost their jobs, inaccessibility to technology, or their employers have reduced their pay. For this reason, the coronavirus pandemic has led to the closure of schools in many affected countries, and no one knows when education institutions will be reopened, particularly those in low and middle-income nations that have poor technology infrastructure.
Andrew DePietro’s article depicts that the coronavirus pandemic has adversely affected the higher educational institutions in the United States of America (USA) (DePietro, 2020). Universities and colleges have been obliged to close down their operations and to convert to online courses. However, many of these institutions are struggling to implement the right technology infrastructure to enhance Internet learning due to the lack of relevant resources, such as finances. Consequently, COVID-19 has made education unaffordable to a specific population, particularly those without an Internet connection and electronic devices.
Hans Sievertsen and Simon Burgess assert that the global lockdown caused by COVID-19 has disrupted students’ learning and might increase inequalities for individuals affected in the long run (Burgess & Sievertsen, 2020). Numerous nations have shut down all educational institutions in an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus. However, policymakers are faced with the dilemma of extending the policy to shut down schools to reduce the spread of the disease and save lives or opening them to prevent the economy from falling apart. Although many schools have implemented online learning, homeschooling is not the best since it can hinder students’ social skills and awareness.
