Shakespeare’s sonnets were non-dramatic poems that were written and included in his plays. Still, they are known as a series of over a hundred and fifty poems that give a story about youthful aristocratic, as well as a mystical mistress. Besides, it is essential to comprehend that these sonnets are based on various themes such as love, politics, sexuality, and gender, among others. However, the subject of love and lust has appeared in most of Shakespeare’s sonnets; this is evident in how the author has expressed various issues such as admiration of beauty, which has been perceived differently. Further, it is essential to comprehend that there is beauty that Shakespeare considered good for the spirit, and there is also a beauty that is seen as evil and corrupt. This literature examines and analyzes the theme of love and lust in Sonnets 18 and 130.
Sonnet 18 is among the most significant of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Ideally, sonnet 18 is based on a man who is aware that the beauty of a woman is not long-lasting and is therefore determined to write about her beauty to make it eternal. Additionally, Shakespeare compared kind love to a summer day and expressed that love may be considered more desirable and controlled than summer; this is seen where he asks, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” Additionally, true love is also expressed when the beauty of a woman is demonstrated as perfect by comparing it to beautiful nature. Besides, Sonnet 18 also promotes the theme of lust, this is clearly based on how the speaker is committed and not holds the perspectives that the beauty of his love is attractive and nice-looking than a summer day. Additionally, the speaker has also immortalized his lover’s beauty and is critical about giving her an eternal life so that her beauty may never get lost. The speaker also finds fault when he starts comparing his lover with a summer day. The comparisons make the audience comprehend that the speaker’s feeling towards his love are absolutely deep and may be consuming him. The lines 9 through twelve of the sonnets makes the audience realize speaker’s deep feeling towards the lover. Most importantly, the enormous love that the speaker has for his lover would be considered as lust because the love is based on physical attraction; the speaker is mainly focused on physical comparisons that shows his desire for his lover.
