Followership refers to intentional actions taken by the subordinate officers or subjects (followers) to achieve the leader’s set objectives (Hurwitz & Hurwitz 2015). Servant leadership, on the other hand, has the leader putting forward the needs of his or her subjects and serving aiming at achieving the set goals (Spears & Lawrence 2016). The two leadership philosophies are mostly applicable in a military set up where military leaders need the help of the rest of subordinate soldiers to achieve their set objective. These two leadership philosophies have similarities as well as differences too. This article compares the two philosophies in an army scenario.
Hurwitz and Hurwitz (2015) claim that followership is a philosophy whose outcome is based on how best the followers can differentiate situations with a positive or negative spirit. As a follower, you have a moral duty to guide your leaders by suggesting to them ideas and opinions that might help in increasing the tacts of dealing with a situation. In the military set up, followers are units or teams under an unofficial leader. The non-commissioned leaders who lead the units provide support in different tasks as well as advising when called for. As a non-commissioned leader, it helps you build trust among the members of your unit and the leader who appointed you.
Servant leaders collect ideas and opinions from other members to use in deciding a problem. Army values and ethics help soldiers to develop positively in their work environment. You have to follow all the military values and ethics as a servant leader. You should always respect the soldiers and ask them for their opinions on certain issues or problems.
