The Final Essay for this course will afford you the opportunity to work closely with an issue, problem, thematic, or set of questions or ideas encountered in the course readings, lectures, discussions, or Audio-Visual sources.
For your Final Essay Assignment you draw on one of the Readings and develop a discussion/analysis of the film Monsieur Lazhar viewed during the course;
Select one of the Course Readings to analyze the film Monsieur Lazhar viewed in class.
This involves identifying one or two key issues raised in the Reading and discuss the issue(s) in relation to the film Monsieur Lazhar. You might discuss how certain scenes from the film explain or illustrate the ideas in the Reading, or how they contradict certain claims and make them problematic. This assignment requires you to explicitly treat the film as a “text” to be “read” and “interpreted” through relevant issues and problems identified in the Reading. Work closely with the ideas or issues that you identified in the Reading and specifically describe scenes and example from the film. Be sure to properly cite the texts you use.

The film Monsieur Lazhar investigates grief at school after a teacher’s suicide and how the new teacher uses teaching methods. Monsieur Lazhar. Bachir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant, gets a teaching job after the beloved teacher commits suicide, and Lazhar helps the students heal (Falardeau et al., 2011). The main themes are grief, healing, guilt, death, mentoring, the healing process, and relationships. Simon and Alice are the two students who see Martine’s lifeless body and react differently to grief as Simon is angry and in denial while Alice is confused. James Baldwin addresses the subject of racism and injustice in A Talk to Teachers (1963), where the purpose of education has not always improved the welfare of all children. Since Baldwin addresses teachers in his essay, and the article is relevant to the film focusing on teachers and school children. Social justice and teacher-student relationship are essential to meeting diverse students' learning needs and promoting learning and good teaching practice.
Professional teachers impart knowledge, teach, and facilitate learning, but cultural gaps with the students affect the teaching and learning process. Lazhar taught French to French-speaking Canadians, but he was an Algerian immigrant from a different culture, affecting how he related to the students. To Baldwin, the public pronouncement of equality and opportunity for all ignores the plight of black children. In any case, teachers from different backgrounds form their students with assumptions and stereotypes affecting how they teach and assess students. On the one hand, back students are told they belong to the US and pledge alliance, but on the other, they are told black people have had no positive contribution in the US. 
Education and schooling are essential to formal learning, but some educators fail to provide education to meet different learning needs. The film and article are relevant to understanding how teaching practice affects learning as Lazhar’s, and African American students are not necessarily exposed to critical thinking. Lazhar uses old teaching methods without having knowledge and experience on teaching and the accepted teaching practices. Baldwin promotes the case for critical thinking in American education and addressing injustice, so there are equal opportunities for all students. Additionally, Baldwin places a greater burden on educators to address racism and inequality.
