For this assignment, you need to visit the National Archives DOCSTeach site. Historians typically use two types of materials, secondary source, and primary source documents. Good historians rely heavily on original materials created at the time of the event. For this reason, historians spend a good deal of time at the archives. There are many types of archives, but by far, the largest in the United States, is the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
The National Archives contains more than 10 billion documents, and they have collected thousands of those in the National Archives DOCSTeach site. After you have opened the above link, click on “Menu” on the upper left, and then “Documents.” In the “Keyword” box type in the subject you wish to research. Please remember that your topic should fall within the period of history covered by this course. Typical keywords might be something like Jefferson, American Revolution, Madison, Civil War, Lincoln or any number of topics.

As a precaution, avoid using textbooks.Paper should include a thesis statement, and a narrative and conclusion that defends that argument.

American Civil War
The American Civil war is a civil war that took place in America from 1861 to 1865. The war was between the North and the South Unions. While the American Revolution that happened from 1776 to 1783 created the United States, it is the American civil war that determined the kind of nation that America would be. The American civil war gave the slaves a new sense of independence to rebuild their lives and America as their own country and opportunity to recover what they had lost over the years; their families.
In the early 1700s when the Europeans had colonized North America, there was an acute shortage of white slaves to work in the wheat, sugarcane and tobacco plantations. However, this problem was solved when a ship full of African slaves came to solve the problem. However, as it came to be realized, it only added to the problem, not solving it. With time, the trading of black human lives became more lucrative than any other business (Calomiris & Pritchett, 2016). The Northerners and the Southerners started having different opinions on slavery where the southerners argued that slavery was necessary to ensure that the slaves were busy, fed and religious. The northerners, on the other hand, argued that the slaves should be set free, and do as they wish (Huston, 1999). Due to these disagreements, the American Civil War broke out.
During and before the civil war, slaves played a very important role to ensure that they were emancipated from their masters. Prior to the civil war, the slaves had been showing some resistance to their masters. The slaves took advantage of the war in 1863 to free their masters. On 1st January 1863, Abraham Lincoln announced the emancipation proclamation that saw more than three million black people legally free in America; free to live and work (Lorimer, 1976).
