Religion is and has always been an important element in the United States, contributing to the country's diverse cultural society. America stands as the most religious country compared with other advanced countries. Throughout the history of the United States, religion, particularly Christianity, took the center-stage, influencing the country’s development, politics, international relations, and created uniquely American culture. Religion has played a crucial role in the development of the United States, both internally and internationally, shaping the lives and perceptions of Americans for centuries to this day.

Religion impacted the lives of people, influencing their perceptions regarding American industrialism and capitalism. The industrial revolution fueled income inequality, widening the gap between the rich and the poor. Divisions were prevalent with various religious groups interpreting scriptures for their individual benefits. For instance, in regards to the incompatibility question between capitalism and religion, the rich popularized the idea of the rich giving charity to the poor, to reduce inequality. Similarly, American churches accepted donations from the rich, including the so-called robber barons, such as the Baptist John D. Rockefeller, who run unethical businesses. On the other hand, other churches were opposed to accepting fortunes from the rich, insisting that such actions contradicted with Christian values. In the wake of American Industrialism, the question of morality dominated religion, questioning religious values in the changing capitalistic environment.

Religion was a vital aspect that influenced the growth of the American colonies in the face of its European rival empires. For instance, the competition between the French and Britain increased rivalry against Catholicism in America. Nonetheless, some colonies in America, such as Catholic Maryland, were a haven for religious minorities, promoting coexistence for people with varying religious views. However, religion was also impactful in the relationship between the colonists and the Indigenous Americans. For instance, The Pontiac’s War is largely attributed to religion, with Indians seeking to expel the colonialists, gain control and freedom over their religion, and access to their lands.
